First Church is a Christian ministry and part of the United Methodist denomination. We are a connectional church, with congregations all over the globe.
In 1854, the church was born in the converted El Dorado Saloon. It was a leader in the abolitionist movement during the Civil War, and over the last 160 years, has helped to found the University of Southern California, Goodwill Industries, Methodist Hospital, the Chinese Mission, Children's Learning Center, Los Angeles Urban Foundation and several affordable housing properties in Los Angeles.
Our story isn't over! While under lay leadership, First Church is working with our Bishop and Superintendent to design a church for the future of Downtown Los Angeles. You are welcome to join us!
First United Methodist Church is a Reconciling Congregation which means we fully welcome all people into the life of the church, especially those of differing gender and sexual orientations. Reconciling Ministries Network
